Writing Task 1: Writing an Email

Read the following information.

You are applying for a job and need a letter of reference from someone who knew you when you were at school.

Write a letter to the old teacher in about 150-200 words. Your email should do the following things:

  • say what job you have applied for
  • explain why you want this job
  • suggest what information the teacher should include

Dear Mr Murray, I hope you are doing well in these testing times. I am writing to you to request you to provide me with a letter of recommendation for my job application. I am John Doe. I am one of the students who took your Archaeology class in 2019 and passed it with a 4.0 GPA. I remember the way you encouraged us, guided us and taught us the Archaeology class. The way you helped us understand the pre-dating, carbon-dating, and classification of fossils put an interest in me to excel in the field of Archaeology. Determined to become top in this field and earn your praise, after completing my studies, I applied for a job as a Jr. Archaeologist at Smithsonian Museum. I am very much interested in acquiring this job as it helps me get the exposure I need and help me learn different aspects of fossils, thus helping me advance my career. I would appreciate it if you could provide me with the letter and include how I excelled in your class, how I worked with the team efficiently and submitted my work on time. Thanks & Regards, Mark.
